No.5825404, Private, John William HARDY
Aged 35

1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Killed in Action on Monday, 29th May 1940

John William Hardy was born on 17th July 1905) (Newmarket Q3-1905 3B:490), baptised in St Andrew's Chapel, Burwell on 13th August 1905, son of Charles and Alethea HARDY (née PALMBY).
Another man who changed his age, since the CWGC have him as 39 at death and his birth registration actually makes him 35 !

1911 census...Aged 5 he was at Backway, Burwell with his father Charles HARDY [30] labourer born Glemsford, Suffolk; his mother 26, born Wicken and sister Alice Dorothy [6] no place of birth given. His mother died in 1912.

Apparently the children were raised by their grandmother Eliza PALMBY.

His sister had married farm labourer Ernest HEFFER and was in the 1939 register with him and their daughter and 3 sons in 32 Council Houses, Heath Road, Burwell

The only Swaffham Bulbeck connection found is in the Ely Book of Remembrance.

8 of the 25 men of the 1st Suffolk to die that day are buried in Zuidschote, not far NNW from Ypres, presumably a rear guard action as the BEF retreated to Dunkirk.
